I don’t understand how a plant can grow larger without soil. Doesn’t it need some solid matter to turn into more leaves and stuff?

Betta vases are cruel. Most of the time the priority is to make it look pretty and not the fish’s health and happiness which should be top priority with any pet.
Bettas need water at 80 F and a filter. Vases and bowels do not go through the nitrogen cycle where ammonia from waste is turned into nitrites by a bacteria colony that grows in the filter, and then the nitrites are turned into nitrates.
Put colorful marbles in with the plant but please put the betta in a 3+ gallon tank.
