This video is of the interior of sewer main in Hillsborough, California. It was inspected in late 2010. The main is root free because it was treated with an herbacide in advance of the project to clean and video inspect the main (Project 7A). Prior to receiving this video the Town was unaware of the major structural failure pictured at the end of this video. The longitudinal crack suggests further failure is immanent. Vitrified clay pipe like this tends to break apart rapidly once it is damaged. In someways it is very similar to clay pot you use for house plants. It can last a very long time, however if it stays saturated and roots become overgrown inside it will break outwards. Once the process of breaking begins, it is irreversible. To repair this main the Town must pipe burst this portion of the main using a seemless high density polyethlene pipe. Using a plastic liner on a main with such a large structural failure would not be practical. The Town is committed to repairing severe defects like these within 6 months of becoming aware of the defect.
